Ukraine has a long tradition of kilim weaving stretching back centuries. This pretty carpet was probably made in the Kiev district in the last quarter of the 19th century. The design is quite typical of the local folk tradition with repeating floral bouquets. The elements of the field are beautifully spaced, while the ivory border with the random drawing of the flowers is very playful. The weave displays the technique of a master weaver with subtle nuances in the colours which give the design a three-dimensional feel.
