Description Original pressed-relief tile by Mueller Mosaic Company of Trenton, New Jersey, salvaged from the historic Windsor House—also known as the Castle Above the Clouds—on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Installed during the home’s lavish 1930s construction, this piece formed part of an extraordinary Arts-and-Crafts–era architectural commission in which Mueller supplied both custom work and catalog designs throughout the residence. These tiles formed a vibrant arched surround within the home, each featuring a repeating foliate medallion in rich yellow, cobalt blue, iron red, and soft green glazes. The bold color palette and rhythmic pattern are characteristic of Mueller’s work in the early 20th century, where historic European motifs were reinterpreted with distinctly American craftsmanship. Windsor House was constructed in the 1930s for George and Elizabeth Scholze, whose family operated the Scholze Tannery in Chattanooga—at a time when the city was known as the “Saddle Capital of the World.” The home itself is a striking Spanish Revival estate, perched high on Lookout Mountain, and filled with richly detailed architectural elements and custom tilework throughout. Each tile is sold individually, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of this remarkable home. Perfect for display, incorporation into a custom installation, or as part of a larger collection. Each tile measures 6″ tall, and 6-3/4″ wide at the top, and 5-1/8″ wide at the bottom. If ordering multiple items, please contact us for a custom shipping quote.
